Getting to Know San Francisco

San Francisco is compact, covering the tip of a 30-mile peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the San Francisco Bay to the east. The city can be divided into three sections:
  • The downtown district is in the northeast between Van Ness Avenue, Market Street and the bay, and includes the Embarcadero, Union Square, the financial district, Civic Center, Chintatown, North Beach, Nob Hill, Russian Hill and Fisherman's Wharf.

  • The South of Market District, or SoMa, is a trendy warehouse zone that fades into the Mission, the city's Latino quarter, and then the Castro.

  • The western part of the city is mostly residential and stretches from Van Ness Avenue all the way to the Pacific Ocean, encompassing upscale neighborhoods like the Marina and Pacific Heights, less pricey zones like the Richmond and Sunset Districts and Golden Gate Park, Japantown and the Haight.
